Saying Goodbye to 2009

Today we say goodbye to this year, 2009, and tonight my Hero Hubbie has got great plans in mind. Rarely do we have the chance to 'paint the town' and so we have begun a yearly tradition of a fantastic meal to end the year, and begin a new one.
Past years had involved a seafood feast with all of our favorites, including King Crab legs, shrimp and the like, but finances being what they are, this year we opted for a more subtle, still delicious choice: Cornish hens. It's a great tradition, one we hope we can continue, a kind of date night, complete with candles, sweet tunes and my guy. What else could I ask for?

In retrospect we review the year. Our oldest had her First Communion, our son his First Confession, our little girl entered kindergarten, the next youngest assuming her role as older sister and mom's helper,....and our baby, almost 2 years old, mastering communication, walking and eating with a spoon. How our years become defined by the milestones of our children!

I am hopeful for 2010. Any struggles we might have faced this last year only solidified my own personal belief that with God, all things are possible. I have been renewed in the fact that He stands with us, we are not alone. At times, I feel He had been behind me, supporting me, encouraging me. Yet at other times, I sensed God in front of the battle, in front of me, pulling me along where I didn't want to go. And of course, today, as I sat by the fire, with my snoozing 2 year old son, snuggled tightly, I thought of this past year.....and saw God's hand in so many incidences that told me, He was by my side as well: as a friend who consoled me.
What gives me hope? That this same awesome God does this exact thing for us all, individually and as a whole of humanity. So many people suffer out there. So many are hungry, so many are cold. And we have so much to be grateful for. This past year we ate, we slept in warm beds, we had gloves, hats and coats, all our cars started so faithfully, and our freezer was never empty. We told each other often 'love you' and 'I'm sorry' and 'I forgive you'. We laughed, cried, shouted and fought and learned to love each other a step deeper, because we all lived this together.

As we look to this New Year, with all the expectations that I know are on me, as the matriarch of this budding family, I want to take a moment in preparation, a moment to review, forgive, let go and move on. Time waits for no man or mother. I encourage you, take a moment, and review, take a moment to not only forgive those who have hurt you, but to forgive ourselves, for where we lost our way, spoke too soon, reacted too quick. Take inventory and visit a confessional and truly start off the year with a clean slate. Sometimes in all our business we forget to not only ask God for forgiveness, and others for it, we must forgive ourselves. At times, we bring such baggage with us, guilt, frustration, even anger that we didn't measure up to our own expectations. On the brink of a New Year, let us all realize, we did our best with what we had.

Just as a loving father who when a child comes home with a less than desireable grade in school, will ask, "Did you do your best? Well, that's all we expect" so does God our Father, ask us the same question, "Did you do your best? Well, that's all I expect."

Birthday Party with Our Lady

My little girl celebrated her 6th birthday yesterday....and God love her, she asked for a Blessed Mother party.

"Mom, can I have a Mary puzzle? Mom can I have a Mary blanket? Mom can I have a Mary cake? Mom can I have a Mary poster, a Mary church book, a Mary dolly?"

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find all these Blessed Mother gifts? Impossible. They just don't make a Blessed Mother comforter. They don't make Blessed Mother puzzles. But I was so touched that my little girl even asked for such a party, for such sweet gifts, that I made every effort to make some of these wishes come true.

Puzzle: Walgreens to the rescue! They can make a puzzle out of any uploaded photo....yippie! We uploaded a beautiful scene of Our Lady holding the child Jesus, and even were able to write a Happy Birthday message on the puzzle. It came the day before her birthday, and she absolutely loved it.

Our local Catholic book store had a few Mary church books for children to choose from, easy task!

We found a Blessed Mother dolly online, holding the baby Jesus, nice plush and huggable. Amazon.com saved the day, seller: Bigflysports.

The cake, well, that was an adventure. I went to JoAnn Fabrics, and they have a great selection of cake making tools. I am no expert cake maker, but the directions on how to make this cake were easy to follow, and with a few modifications to make it look like Our Lady of Guadalupe, the cake turned out. I learned a new trick with fondant! Gotta love that stuff, it made her cape!

We even purchased a beautiful Miraculous Medal necklace for her, and today, she proudly asked to wear it to school - what mother would say 'no'?

Yesterday we celebrated the birth of our 6 year old, in great style....in honor of our Blessed Mother. This one I won't easily forget.

Christmas Shopping 2009

So I was out this weekend shopping for Christmas. The traffic was crazy. The stores were packed. The lines were long. The shoppers were in a hurry. The cashiers, well, the cashiers were beaten down like I had never seen before.

I was at a Toy R Us, and after waiting a bit for an open cashier, I stepped up with my cart, looked up at my cashier. She said in a meek, defeated voice, "Hello". Her eyes were searching mine, looking for any sign of Christmas cheer. I stopped unloading, and met her eyes with mine. I said, "Hi. Merry Christmas!" Her face lit up like a Christmas tree, no joke. I asked, "How are things going, REALLY?"

Her face dropped again, "Oh, gosh, not well. People are so unhappy this year. I don't know why, but customers are not happy."

"Oh, geez, sorry to hear it. It's the wrong season for that," I replied to her. Her answer was interesting, "Yes, I know, isn't that ironic? The time of year to truly be happy, and people aren't. I just don't get it."

Well, you'd think the retail cashiers would be the first to get it. A customer has spent probably two or three hours just getting through traffic, the aisles in the packed store, waiting in the check out line....and then finally when the customer makes first contact with another human, the patience, the cheer is gone. I know after spending 8 hours on Saturday driving here and there, standing in lines and fighting crowds, my patience was low as well, and I admit, I too layed on my horn in frustration a few times.

We can make all kinds of resolutions about being more prepared, shopping earlier etc, etc, and truth be told, we probably will resort to what we've always done, wait until the last minute.

We will all be out there, battling the frustrations of waiting, crowds, and spending more than we'd like....and the challenge is how do we treat people when we are at our most frustrated. Do we take out our frustration on the cashier waiting to check us out? Do we take out our frustration on the horn of our car when we get cut off. Do we allow the crowds to diminish our Christmas happiness? How we handle others in stressful situations, at times, truly defines our character.

How easy is it to be nice, cheerful and pleasant when the stores are empty, no traffic, and you just caught the biggest sale? It's easy. We don't have to work that hard at all to spread a little cheer.

Christmas is, of course, about Christ being born. To make ourselves ready, sometimes it takes work. Here's a suggestion, measure yourself at your weakest, most tired or most frustrated. Take a minute and see how you treat others around you, when it's the most difficult. Measure your strength of character in those moments.....and see....are you ready for the newborn Christ?

There is still time....You've got eleven days. Start small, and just wish those ladies behind the counter a Merry Christmas and smile.

Tiger Woods: Does Money Corrupt?

"Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." Matthew 19:24

My HH got into an interesting discussion last night in regards to the recent scandal surrounding Tiger Woods. Unfortunately Tiger has joined the many other famous, wealthy individuals whose image conflicts with reality, and his lack of moral values has corrupted him, his wife, and children.
As my HH and I discuss the news worthy topics of the day while making dinner, I made the comment, "Well, goes to show, money corrupts."

My hubbie disagreed. And to a certain point, I understand why. I am sure there are just as many loyal, moral, extremely wealthy individuals out there, as I am sure there are just as many scandalous Tiger Woods out there, just with out the fortune. I guess I can see how extreme wealth CAN corrupt more easily than with out it. How easy was it for Tiger to have access to multiple women? How many assistants does he have that would clammer to please him. How many women would forgive and forget his marital status because of the billions he could influence them with?

I guess I shouldn't say, "Money corrupts....." I should say, "It's easy to allow money to corrupt."

Now I am unsure of Tiger's past, his childhood, his family life, his parents etc, but I do believe the foundation of character building and moral virtue begins at home, and at a young age. Who knows which of our children might live the extreme wealth as a Tiger Woods? Who knows which of our children might have multiple homes, endorsement deals, private jets, fancy cars, assistants etc....I certainly don't know God's plan for my children.

All I can do, as a mother, as a Stay At Home Mom at Work - is to give the best foundation I can while I can. Once the children are grown, they must be able to make right choices, complete with the moral fiber of their upbringing. There must be a spiritual foundation on which to build, on which the children can rely on when temptation is at it's worst.

And believe me, no matter the income level of our adult children, temptation will be there, in many different forms. But it all stems from similar places: fear, distrust, insecurity, loneliness and the list goes on. How the devil must be delighting in all of Tiger's scandal. Not only has this man allowed himself to be corrupt, but now it's public, for all to mock at, or immortalize, thus bringing more souls under his wing.

I do think it possible, as does my HH, that one can have extreme wealth AND have the moral foundation to resist corruption, but I think it's very difficult. When you can buy anything, and everything your heart desires, and those around you cater to your every whim, the obligation to remain accountable to oneself can be a tremendous cross. As Christ states, "It's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle."
As much as we all might lament, how expenses rise each year without the income to rise with it, there is a temptation to resort to envy those with extreme wealth. Today, I can see, even those billionaire Tiger Woods of the world, are sought after to succumb to temptation. The devil knew his weakness. He may be the best golfer in the world. He wasn't immune against the evil one, and the devil wants us all.

And so to my HH, honey, you are right, money doesn't corrupt. It just seems to make our own weaknesses and temptations more complicated and harder to resist.
Praying for Tiger's family today, Lord have mercy.

Immaculate Conception

Today is a Holy Day, The Immaculate Conception of Our Lady, the Blessed Mother, Mary.

People often confuse this Holy Day, as they assume The Immaculate Conception refers to Christ's conception. Not so. Our Lady was conceived in St. Anne's womb with a perfectly clean soul, no original sin, immaculate so that even from her conception, God had prepared her to welcome Christ within her.

Isn't that beautiful? God prepared her soul, layed the groundwork, gave her the grace to ultimately bring our Lord into the world. Now, that's planning ahead! Thirteen or fourteen years later, He then came to her by way of an angel to present her with a plan.

I once heard a priest describe that moment where she is contemplating her fiat....and he describes all of heaven, angels and all, on the edge of their seat, biting their nails, eagerly anticipating her response. And of course as we all know, and celebrate in the Christmas season, she, having been prepared for this from the moment of her Immaculate Conception, responded in all her free will, a resounding yes to His will for her....and for all mankind.

In essence her 'yes' is a 'yes' on all humankind's behalf. She said 'yes' for all of us: Men and woman alike, she responded for me, personally, and for you, personally.

So today, as you attend Mass, and contemplate Mary's Immaculate Conception, imagine God, in His divine way, preparing her for the Baby Jesus. So intimate, so delicate, so personal - He knows us all in such a way. And it's by our own 'yes' that allows Him to also prepare us for the Baby Jesus.
