So the other day, my 7 year old, accidentally flushed his Lego Motorcycle down the toilet. It was quite traumatic for him, as it was his favorite toy. I used a plunger many a time to try and retrieve it, with no avail. It was gone for good, I thought, and so told him. A couple times that day, he came to me, crying for his long gone motorcycle, and all I could say was “sorry, buddy, it’s gone”.
Well, the toilet never quite flushed the same way again. Finally my Hero Husband came home, was told the dilemma and resolved to fix the blasted toilet. So away he worked, for several hours, bringing a variety of tools, towels, caulk, and buckets. He pulled that whole thing out of the floor, disconnected the plumbing, to find the culprit toy. Slowly but surely, he put the machine back together, re-caulking the base, and wiping up the floor.
So my HH gave me the toy, looked at our son in the other room, said, ‘Would you like to do the honors?’. Every hero should have their reward, the fruit of his time and effort. The smile on my son, once he realized his lost toy had been found, (and sanitized), was absolutely worth the work. And so my HH was the one to give the treasure back to the boy, and be on the receiving end of his admiration.
Every hero needs that kind of motivation to keep being the hero. At times, the smile from the child, isn’t enough - it must come from the one who he REALLY wants to impress….his wife. It IS work on our part to be sure to congratulate him, to gush about the hard work he does, to speak like that damsel in distress saying, “My Heeerrrroooo”, as we swoon into his arms, dramatically. But that’s more or less what he needs to keep being that hero we all want in our husbands. It keeps him motivated, anxious to keep ‘saving the day’. It tells him we need him. We have to allow him a place, a place of honor and distinction apart and unique from us…..our boys need to learn from example what it is to be a man. Our daughters need to know what to expect from their own husbands one day. Us, as wives, need to realize, at the core of our men is the ultimate desire to please us. Conquer it for us. All we have to do is recognize it, appreciate it, love him for it. They have the hard job – conquering the plumbing, and we have it easy, we just have to say Thanks.
